Auto Insurance Coverage for Pizza Delivery, Uber, Door Dash

Most rideshare and delivery drivers are independent contractors.   When driving a personal vehicle, there are auto insurance requirements above and beyond what your personal insurance policy covers. Your personal care insurance typically will not cover you while you're driving for a food or delivery service.

Your personal auto insurance policy covers you while you're driving for personal reasons (not logged in to a rideshare or delivery app).  If you get in an accident while on a delivery your insurance company may deny your claim.

Although a number of companies (like Uber, Grub Hub, and Lyft) offer some coverage to eligible drivers while in the act of delivery, that coverage usually only applies to specific "phases" in the delivery process. There still may be a coverage gap between when your personal policy coverage ceases, and the company's coverage begins.  That gap is the period between when you turn on the app but haven't started the delivery process.

To make sure you're protected, ask your insurance agent about "rideshare" insurance, which can be purchased as a stand-alone policy or added as an endorsement (rider) to your personal auto policy. With a rideshare endorsement, you're protected during any gaps. Coverage usually matches the coverage types and limits you have on your personal auto policy. Check with your agent for details about your policy coverage.
